Do you take this ring?

A couple of months ago I accompanied my mom to Tiffany & Co. While she was looking for a houseware gift for someone, I mozied on over to the sparkly jewelry creations on the other side of the store. While I was there, I happened to notice a section marked as “engagement rings for $4,000” (at least I think it was something like that – it might have been $4,000 or less). I actually found this quite interesting. Money is so tough these days that it’s nice to know that even Tiffany wants to give its customers a break.

Just for fun, I took a look at the Tiffany website to see if the same “deal”(?) was available there. What fun it is to design your own sparkly ring (an activity I’ve never really pursued because I personally do not want an engagement ring – a wedding band alone is fine with me). So, for those soon-to-be engaged folks out there, here are some sparkly sparklers I found that are in the $4,000 range:

$4,125 Tiffany Three Stone Circlet ring

Sperry pretty

I’m pretty sure that my brother (and his very fashionable girlfriend) wears Sperry shoes. I’m pretty sure that I’ve made fun of him for wearing them (along with his many other ultra-preppy garments, like J.Crew seersucker pants) – although I do it with love. So, I feel like a bit of a hypocrite when I say that I’m actually starting to dig the Sperry!

There’s something about this shoe. It makes me feel very summer, very nautical, very… Martha’s Vineyard. I feel like one wearing this shoe could trick someone into believing he/she is from New England (and no one could call the bluff). Paired with some chinos and a blue and white striped shirt (perhaps a bucket hat, as well), the whole outfit emits summer sophistication.

And there’s also the comfort thing. How comfy do they look? Now, as a non-owner of the Sperry, I have yet to strut around in these babies. However, they seem to be popping up everywhere and as far as I’m concerned they sure do look comfy! Check out some of my favorite Sperry looks now:

Long time coming, Longchamp

When, exactly, did the Longchamp make a comeback? Was the Longchamp-bag-wearing trend ever really dead? And which wise person thought to restart the Longchamp legacy? Whoever she (or he) is, let her know that the Longchamp has, indeed, been reborn.

I remember, quite vividly, being an undergrad (the year I focus on is, eh, about 2002, I think – so much for “vivid” memories) and witnessing the emergence of the Longchamp. A friend of mine had this large black nylon bag with a brown leather tab. I didn’t make much of it at first, but then, these bags were EVERYWHERE. On the street, in the subway, in the dorms. What was the allure of the Longchamp (specifically, “Le Pliage”)?

Maybe it was the bag’s simplicity. Maybe it was a nice (albeit pricey) and durable (although this is questionable – how many textbooks do you carry?) alternative to other bookbags and messenger bags (think “Felicity” years). Or maybe it was just fun to see which fared better – the Longchamp or the Herve Chapelier (which currently appears in need of some reinventing or new campaign). Whatever it was, everyone (well, at least a lot of the students at NYU) fell for the Longchamp.

And then, it sort of went away. Or did it? I can’t remember. I keep trying to recall how many Longchamp bags I saw between 2005 and 2008. Maybe a handful? Is that possible? Were there more? Or have I just been blinded by the freebie “100% organic” bags we’ve all been wearing instead of “real” handbags over the past two years?

Whomever spawned the new (“2009 new”) Longchamp movement/revitalization was likely some girl in her twenties who had an old Longchamp sitting in her closet (wow – this is starting to sound a lot like me) which she decided to use to carry extra clothing, magazines, etc. to work one day. But what originally appeared to be a simple decision, unexpectedly engendered a new kind of respect for the Longchamp. Suddenly, they were everywhere. It almost felt like an overnight sensation (or maybe, again, this was all in my head?). Whatever it was, I could feel the Longchamp making a comeback. And let’s face it - everyone loves a great comeback (especially when it means you can save your penny and take out a bag you thought you’d put to rest).

Oh, and Kate Spade, let me know when I can take out my little black bag of yours from back in the day.

And for something totally different (and awesome)...

...check out my friend Fahmina's blog "Brit Fancy" - it's awesome AND..... it currently features a blog entry that I wrote (about plaid fashion)! Check it out here ! (And make sure to check out the entire fabulous "Brit Fancy" blog - http://britfancy.blogspot.com/2009/07/look-smart-in-tartan-rad-in-plaid.html)

I don't know what happen to me, but...

I finally did it – I finally bought a pair of Tory Burch flats. I was never a fan – never. Why spend $200 on a pair of shoes? But then I realized that all of my flats and flip flops were falling apart. How every two months or so I’d probably spent $200 on several cheap sandals/walking shoes/etc. I thought, “Wait a minute – it’s time to invest in ONE high end pair rather than several ill-fitting/short-lasting pairs.” I really felt that such a decision was wise and that a pair of Tory Burch shoes could go the distance. I know, I know – the Tory Burch flat is SO two years ago (or three years? I’m not sure). And I never found them to be that stylish; in fact, I found myself in a monotonous sea of the very same Tory Burch flats during my Long Island-to-Manhattan commute over the past year or two. I think, in my head, I vowed never to wear such a "trendy" shoe.

But then, the Tory Burch bug got me. I sort of fell… in love? And then this infatuation sort of grew and grew until I finally stepped foot (in my Havaianas) in Bloomingdales. I though to myself, “Maybe I can negotiate some discount with the salesman – say, maybe some kind of student discount?” There I was, thinking the store NEEDED my money – NEEDED my $195 plus tax. Oh no – that was not the case. I arrived at the Bloomingdales (midtown NY, NY) shoe department and it was like every woman in NYC was there. Shoes were literally FLYING off the racks. Total pandemonium. I, the scared little mouse in the wild jungle of shoe shoppers, delicately picked up and turned over each Tory Burch shoe to see if any of them were on sale (I know – I must have been kidding myself, right?). Instead, I found statements like “COMPLETELY SOLD OUT” or “THIS IS THE LAST PAIR” on the bottom of each floor sample. I started to realize that this Tory Burch shoe thing was some serious business.

To make a long story short – I CAVED. When the incredibly nice shoe salesman found a plain, black pair of Tory Burches in my size (with leather that felt like butter – I know, I’m the former vegetarian that intends to go back to vegetarianism one day and here I am talking about leather – oh boy), it was an instant hit. And before I knew it, some saleswoman was swiping my credit card, I was perspiring, and I longed for the days when shopping was stress-free (wait – those days never existed).

So, in honor of that special day and the days ahead (in which I will be scouting out Tory Burches in other shades (and on sale)), I present to you the Reva variety:

Favorite of mine...

Vince is the one! Take a look at some of my favorite Vince lookbook looks...

I thought I'd take a moment to talk about my favorite clothing brand - the beauty that is Vince. The brand features classic, everyday pieces, but each item of clothing is made of rich, incredibly soft fabric(s). I honestly think I could live on a wardrobe (and when I say "wardrobe," I mean for work AND play) consisting of a few Vince garments. The clothing is so simple, but it feels divine. The sweaters (especially the chunky ones), are can't-live-without items for Fall, Winter (and even cool days in Spring and Summer). The khaki pants and shorts look tailored, but are loose enough that you'd want to lounge around in them all day. And, of course, there are the A-MAZING thick (but oh-so-soft) blazers that I am DYING to have (but, right now, it's not in my budget).
So why all this talk of Vince if it's one of the pricier lines around? Because it makes MUCH more sense to invest in three really fantastic Vince pieces (I'd say two sweaters, one pair of pants), then 10 really cheap (and short-lived) pieces. Especially when it comes to Fall - get that sweater that you can use many times (as opposed to that ultra-trendy garment that will fall apart in two wears). Also, there are really amazing discounted Vince items out there. Bloomingdales, Saks, shopbop.com are three of my favorite go-to destinations when it comes to finding great Vince deals (and even the Vince website itself has great deals).
